Air Testing

Air leakage describes the uncontrolled movement of air into and out of a building. The more airtight a building is, the less often the air changes within it and so less energy is required to maintain warmth inside it. By limiting the leakage of heated/conditioned air from buildings, it is possible to reduce energy consumption and costs.

The government has made commitments to reduce carbon emissions through the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and the Kyoto Agreement. UK building regulations now specify that all new homes meet a certain level of air tightness as specified in its 'SAP' calculations. Part L is their method for addressing the conservation of fuel and power in buildings based on their overall 'Emission Rate' and as such places performance requirements on airtightness. Performance is proven through site testing of the completed building.

EPSW can carry out air tests to establish air leakage on a completed structure, and supply the required certification to obtain Local Authority Building Control Approval.

EPSW is a member of BINDT (British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing). All tests are carried out in accordance with ATTMA (Air Tightness Testing & Measure Association) TSL1 Standards by BINDT registered engineers. The equipment used to carry out air permeability tests is calibrated annually to UKAS standards.
